Project Overview
Client idea is to build a music database that allows users to search and browse the music they love, contact artists and labels, sell new and used records, buy digital releases, organise and track their collection and wantlists and find relevant information about discographies and history of artists and labels. The net offers already a number of established platforms for browsing, buying and selling physical and digital music, streaming services and database. The opportunity here is to all of these in one platform.

My role was to run a competitor research to find strong and weak point of the platforms, run a user research to understand how people deal with online music nowadays, create user personas, build IA and wireframe, design a cross platform UI for web, mobile and android.
Competitor Analysis
We analysed some of the major music platform around the net and gathered a lot of useful information about their user base, what kind of service they stand out for, which ones are strong in streaming, which ones allow interaction and messaging between users, artists and label owners, what's the best place to sell and buy physical releases and which one is for digital. Each platform excels in one or two services, and lacks in all the others, so the we validated the opportunity of building a place where all these services are offered.

User Research
User Research
The goal of the research was to understand how people use music platforms, what are their goals, what are their frustrations and what they really expect when using a music platform. We run a survey recruiting targeted audience on Discogs.com, and non targeted audience on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
Questions were around these topics:

-
Which music media do users prefer ( vinyl, streaming, digital )
-
Do they collect music, and if yes, in which format
-
What music platform they use and why
-
Do users buy or sell physical releases ( vinyl, cd )
-
Are they professionally into the music business ( dj's, producers, music store owners, label managers )
-
Are they interested in old and out of print music
-
Do they stick to favourite artists, labels and style or they enjoy random music
-
How much time do they dedicate to listening to music
We collected some interesting and useful data, both quantitative and qualitative.
User Personas
User Personas
Based on some of the data we gathered form surveys and research, we built 9 main user personas to represent our potential users and build user flows and IA around them.
Card sorting
Research results and user personas design gave us a general idea about what functionality we wanted to include in our product. We then run a card sorting exercise with the aim of organising all these information in a logical way. This was the base upon which we started building the information architecture.
Information Architecture
Information Architecture and User flow
With user personas and content organisation defined, we started to build the information architecture and user flows of our platform.
User Interface
User Interface
Once flows and wireframe were ready, I started to work on the actual UI of the platform.
Took care of the mobile web version, desktop responsive version, and android app based on Material Design system. I delivered the style guide and a clickable prototype in Figma.
Logo idea and some illustrations were also required. I did not take part on the user testing for this project.
